Community History Exhibitions
After last year's successful project on the history of New Milton and Barton-on-Sea, the museum aims to bring local history exhibitions into rural communities with a series of exhibitions on the history of Sway, Hordle, Tiptoe, Everton and Wootton, called Villages and Visionaries. The exhibitions will illustrate how these villages have been transformed from scattered agricultural hamlets to sizeable communities over the last hundred years. In addition, this area has been witness to the extraordinary stories of the Shakers of hordle and Peterson, the builder of Sway Tower, the world's tallest non-reinforced concrete building.
In June and July exhibitions in village halls will bring these stories to life with the help of images, objects and reminiscences from local families and the museum's collections. The museum hopes that many individuals will help with the historical research and organisation of the exhibition or join in with creative writing and arts projects which will enable them to explore aspects of their village's past, present and future. An extended exhibition will open at the museum in November.
