At St. Barbe Museum and Art Gallery we have much to offer all who wish to develop skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of subjects. Our popular exhibitions of nationally-significant art draw a wide audience for informal learning.

Gallery talks

Lifelong Learning We organize gallery talks by artists and curators for many of our exhibitions and places on these can be pre-booked. See our Events page for a full programme.

Art courses

We run art workshops by local and exhibiting artists across a range of media. In addition, there is an annual opportunity for local artists to present work for our annual Open Exhibition. Works are selected by a panel of professional artists to showcase the best in art from the region. Criticism sessions by members of the judges panel are also organized from time to time. See our Events and Exhibitions pages for a full programme.

Talks

Our Education Officer and Curator offer talks on a range on subjects including aspects of local history and local artists. These are available to local community groups in return for donation.
Cost: we request a minimum donation of £30.

Reminiscence

Lifelong Learning We offer outreach Reminiscence Sessions for Care Homes and Day-Centres. Residents recreate elements of their pasts by the memories evoked by handling artefacts. Lively discussion follows which continues for many well after the session is ended. We offer sessions on general reminiscence - excellent as a starter, Nights Out, Childhood, Busy about the House, Royal Events, Seaside and Tea time.
A session lasts about 1½ hours.
Cost: we request a minimum donation of £25.

Short Courses

Look out for occasional short courses on aspects of our past. The next short course is planned for Spring 2008 : Fans, Lace and Fancy Goods - an exploration of wonderful textiles.
