St Barbe for Ukraine

St Barbe has been very active over the last 8 weeks supporting our Ukrainian guests. Our original aim was to lead a support hub in Lymington and Pennington and surrounding areas. We are working closely with New Forest District Council, Lymington & Pennington Town Council, Lymington Library, New Forest Basics Bank, Citizens Advice, the Baptist Church and the Community Centre. It has proved a successful mix of activity and support.

We have also been working with New Forest Homes for Ukraine who are acting as a “matching” service with potential hosts finding Ukrainians trying to find safety away from their war torn country. Unsurprisingly, the New Forest has become a popular destination with our guests and we have found that Lymington is giving them a fine welcome. Our guests appreciate the generosity of their hosts and the wider community; just seeing the profusion of the Ukrainian national colours on buildings, cars and on individuals means so much to our guests.

What is St Barbe doing?

  • St Barbe are offering guests free entry to the Museum for one year.
  • As a charity, we have been given 150 free Vodafone SIM cards which helps guests communicate more easily within the UK.
  • We have managed to source school uniforms for our school age guests and have worked with the schools and the Library to ensure successful distribution.
  • St Barbe is hosting English lessons for adults starting in early June. This will be a significant benefit to guests who are looking for work.
  • We are planning an “after school club” for older students to be held once a week at the Museum; it will be a chance for hosts and guests to socialise in the café as well as the children enjoying a fun time in the Museum.
