Summary: part of fossil pinecone, dug out of Bartonian clay beds below Barton in 1997 by donor. Sent to Mary Rose Trust in 1997 for conservation, sent by them to the School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews. Returned by Mary Rose Trust in 2018! Part of one pinecone, 3.5cm high by 2cm wide. Caroline Clasby suggests this is from Araucaria sp. pine trees (forms of monkey puzzle). Date between 56 million and 34 million years BC. Fragile, bits flaking off.
