Description

Summary: photograph, black & white, Pylewell House, seen across lawn

Identification note: When the estate was put up for sale following Joseph Weld’s death in 1863, the auction advertisement described the house as a ‘capital and substantial building, of chaste elevation, in the Italian style of Architecture’. William Whitaker bought the house in 1874 and enlarged it, but part of its east and west wings were pulled down by the third William Whitaker in the 1950s to save money.
