Description

Summary: grenade, found on beach at Hurst Castle. Round wooden ball, ?tropical hard wood, with cork plug. Date vague probably 1750 to end of Napoleonic War. 8 inch grenades were thrown by seamen from mast tops on to decks of enemy vessels, bursts into splinters on impact. Ours is very heavy c. 12cm diameter. Dark brown, battered surface.

Identification note: Bought at car boot sale - from man who said he got it off beach at Hurst Castle. Information in file from Royal Armouries, Fort Nelson.
