Description
Summary: print, Solent Sea Baths, Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, engraved by Haghe, published by R A Grove (r.1830), baths in middle distance, with other buildings, fishing boats with nets and dinghies in foreground
Identification note: This romantic view shows the main building and an entrance lodge while the building with pillars was for sheltering carriages and horses. The print was made a few years after the baths were rebuilt to a design by Lymington architect, Mr Bartlett. According to Grove’s description there were hot, cold, vapour and shower baths, two swimming baths, with considerable grounds including an area for promenades and archery. The upper story contained a reading room with ‘various and pleasing’ views. Groves claimed the waters of the Solent ‘have long been considered the purest of the coast’.
