Description

Summary: boy's round cap; shaped to a point in front. Made of dark brown velour fabric, trimmed and stiffened with grosgrain ribbon and a thin wavy line of ribbon round the edge. Cotton lining, which has come away from one edge showing a hessian lining underneath. Top of cap has split open and rotted. Approximately 17cm wide and 23cm long across bottom edge.

Identification note: one of three boys caps, found under the window ledge in the McCarthy Room in the museum, when it was renovated in Spring 2017. (McCarthy Room is in south east corner of museum, a Victorian addition added in 1879. The three caps were found under the three window ledges in the room; the ledges sloped and a narrow slit gave access to the space underneath. Recognised and saved by Rob Lansdown, the site agent. Ledges are high up - so possibly put there by builder not boys? One cap under each ledge. Dates of caps probably 1870s: room built 1879. All caps have been dusted, but not otherwise cleaned. 2017.
