Description

Summary: box for Lymington marine epsom salts, wood, soft wood painted on outside with marble effect dark brown paint to look like a hard wood. Lid attached with small brass loops: catch also brass metal. Inside lid, a rectangular orange paper label stuck on, with writing in central circle: "Lymington Marine epsom salts manufactured by Mr West of Lymington, Hants.."On outside of lid, same label was stuck, but only central portion survives with odd spots of the rest.

Identification note: see note in object information file on how box got there. Must date before at least c.1850s when salt works shut down. Very good condition. A few brown spots in base of box. Dating from the 1820s to 1830s, this box contained Epsom salts manufactured by Mr West of Lymington. A speciality of the Lymington salt industry, they could be made in the winter as well as the summer. They have been used from the early 17th century to treat asthma, sore muscles, constipation and gout.

Identification note: found in teaching collection 2016. Came in c.2005, as we have photo of label inside.
