Description

Summary: digital image, scan of black and white photograph, The Old Vicarage, Hordle, 1945

Identification note: "A vicarage was built in Hordle in 1862 at what later became Pinewood. In 1889, however, a new vicarage was designed by the architect Reginald Read and built for £2,019 11s by Thomas and Herbert Rashley of Lymington. The house was built of Milton bricks with a red tile roof and had attractive architectural details. By 1945 the upkeep on this huge 10 bedroom house had become too much and a new more moderate~ sized vicarage was built in Stopples Lane. The old vicarage was sold to the Hoole family who divided it in two and ran a market gardening and pig farming business from its three acres. It was sold to Coltens for a nursing home in 1989 but later demolished."
