Description

Summary: map, colour printed map, scale approx. 1 to 126720, in card mount, showing the New Forest and western Solent, including railway lines and proposed rail bridge link to the Isle of Wight from Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, from about 1910

Identification note: The London & South Western Railway (LSWR), who operated the Lymington branch, objected to the bill to build the Solent Tunnel, because they preferred the construction of a tunnel from Stokes Bay to Ryde. However, they eventually agreed to make the junction with the branch line. Although further Acts were passed in 1909 and 1914, the scheme was abandoned following the outbreak of war in 1914. The Solent scheme was given fresh impetus in 1935, again led by Frank Aman. This time the preferred route was from Stokes Bay to Ryde, but the Southern Railway was lukewarm to the idea. In a final attempt to see his dream come to fruition, Frank Aman conducted a postcard ’Gallup’ Poll amongst Island residents. The majority responded in favour, but refused to finance part of the cost of the project out of the rates! The scheme was finally laid to rest at the start of the World War II in 1939.
