Description

Summary: coin, Antoninianus of Victorinus. O: Radiate draped bust R, [DIVO VI]CTORINO PIO; R: Altar aflame (never before seen on coins of Divus Victorinus), CONS[E]CRATIO

Identification note: Victorinus ruled the Gallic Empire between AD 269 and 271, defeating the German barbarians and suppressing a major revolt in south-eastern Gaul, but losing south-western Gaul to Claudius II, ruler of the Central Empire. Unfortunately he had a weakness for his soldiers’ wives, and was assassinated after propositioning the wife of a senior officer. He was deified after his death by his mother Victoria, who continued to hold power and ensured the appointment of his successor Tetricus I.

Identification note: layer 2. This coin presents a new Consecratio type of reverse for the Divus Victorinus series and does not appear to be a barbarous issue.
