Description

Summary: watercolour, mounted and framed ink drawing with watercolour wash, a panoramic view by Anthony Devis showing the Lymington River, the bridge, toll house and shipping, and the houses of Lymington, as seen from a point close to Buckland Rings, Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, done about 1792

Summary: The title on the later mount says 'circa 1760', but the watermark dates the paper to after 1780, and a Devis watercolour of the Needles, now at the Victoria and Albert Museum, is dated by the artist 1792. Lymington from a point two miles out of the town, near the Turnpike Road. This view of the river looking towards the Isle of Wight from the Iron Age hill fort, Buckland Rings would probably have been unchanged for many centuries apart from the causeway and toll bridge which was built across the river in 1731 and was still a relatively new feature when this painting was made.
