Description

Summary: painting, watercolour of the drawing room at Newlands Manor, Everton, Hordle, Hampshire, with the music room in the background, painted by William Cornwallis-West in 1870. Copy photograph in LMGLM/F3/F2/box 343

Identification note: The drawing room and music room at Newlands were designed for entertaining, with music and dancing. There was a library for Cornwallis, a small breakfast room and a large dining room. On the first floor there was a superb oval room with a sea view. This might have been used as a bedroom or sitting room. The house remained largely unaltered until 1910 when nurseries were added over the music room and drawing room, which had previously been single storey. The well-known Milford architect William Ravenscroft was employed, who matched the extension to the original very skilfully.
