Description

Summary: boy's deer stalker cap, made of woollen worsted fabric, buff coloured with fine red and blue stripes. Cap has two ear flaps, originally fastened with dark brown ribbon (?), later brown elastic, now decayed. Two small peaks between ear flaps. Cap is lined with cotton over hessian, bottom edge has some padding. Peak has cardboard stiffening. Approximate 17cm diameter.

Identification note: one of three boys caps, found under the window ledge in the McCarthy Room in the museum, when it was renovated in Spring 2017. (McCarthy Room is in south east corner of museum, a Victorian addition added in 1879. The three caps were found under the three window ledges in the room; the ledges sloped and a narrow slit gave access to the space underneath. Recognised and saved by Rob Lansdown, the site agent. Ledges are high up - so possibly put there by builder not boys? One cap under each ledge. Dates of caps probably 1870s: room built 1879. All caps have been dusted, but not otherwise cleaned. 2017.

Identification note: cap is very dirty from conditions it was in. Material on flaps part motled; one peak is very decayed. Lining has holes.
