Description

Summary: photograph, deep snow in the High Street, looking east, Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, 1881

Identification note: Lymington High Street after the great blizzard of January 1881. Here the pavements have been cleared but the snow is several feet deep on the road. Many local villages were cut off by the fall and more problems were caused by flooding when the snow eventually thawed. Among the shops visible on the north side of the High Street is the unfortunately named Eli Bollock, a baker based at number 100.
