John Card (known as Jack) (1871-1953) came to the New Forest, aged 12, from the Isle of Wight as a servant to Charles Dallas who went on to buy the Eastley Wootton estate. Dallas enjoyed hunting, shooting and fishing and Card, who acted as his manservant, travelled with him around the world including to Scotland, Scandinavia and even on safari to Africa. Card had a house built in Bashley in 1908 and named it ‘Nairobi’.
