Description

Summary: tile, blue design of boat by quay with bridge, 2 men and goods hoist, corner motif of open sky, Dutch, from a shop in Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, late 18th century

Identification note: These 18th century Delft tiles were discovered in the old Ford’s shop at 60 High Street, Lymington. Some may have been smuggled into the country from Holland, as there was a high tax on foreign tiles at that time to protect the English tile industry. Many Delft tiles depict bodies of water, boating and pastoral scenes.
