Description
Summary: tile, blue design of windmill and bridge in octagonal studded border, with corner motif of quarter sunflower, English, from a shop in Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, about 1750 to 1770
Identification note: These 18th century Delft tiles were discovered in the old Ford’s shop at 60 High Street, Lymington. Some may have been smuggled into the country from Holland, as there was a high tax on foreign tiles at that time to protect the English tile industry. Many Delft tiles depict bodies of water, boating and pastoral scenes.
