Description

Summary: scan of black and white photo of a family on a caravan holiday in the New Forest in August 1968

Identification note: During the 1950s and 1960s the Sanders family came from Worcester Park in London each year to set up their caravan at Longslade in the New Forest. Mr Sanders was a teacher so the family camped for the full 6 weeks of the school holidays. They were given drinking water by Mr Gates who manned the level crossing at Caters Cottage and they washed in the nearby stream. When wild camping was stopped in 1972, they stayed at a campsite on a farm in Silver Street, Sway.
