Description
Summary: tile, purple design of 2 people on bridge with buildings and 2 swans, with corner motif of daisy, Dutch, from a shop in Lymington, Lymington and Pennington, Hampshire, mid 18th century
Identification note: From a house at 60 High Street, Lymington, these tiles are from Holland and may have been smuggled into the country. There was a high tax on imported tiles in the 18th century to protect the English tile industry.
Identification note: These 18th century Delft tiles were discovered in the old Ford’s shop at 60 High Street, Lymington. Some may have been smuggled into the country from Holland, as there was a high tax on foreign tiles at that time to protect the English tile industry. Many Delft tiles depict bodies of water, boating and pastoral scenes.
