St Barbe providing practical help to Ukrainian refugees arriving in Lymington

It is almost impossible to ignore the horrific pictures of families being split and homes devastated by the war in Ukraine. As the first trickle of refugees arrive in the UK, St Barbe will use its position as a charitable hub in the community to provide practical support.

Many families fleeing their war-torn country will have suffered considerable trauma and will need to rebuild their lives in a strange land. St Barbe has well established links with schools, counselling services, the food bank, other charities and community organisations.

We have set up a special project team and recruited Jerry Weber as a volunteer project coordinator to build a support organisation in conjunction with local partners, including the Council. Initially we will focus on Ukrainians in Lymington & Pennington, but we also plan to work with other support groups in neighbouring towns or villages and share best practices with them.

As part of our work in the community, we already sponsor several small groups and organise get-togethers, so they can benefit from mutual support and learning. We are building a network of support to give Ukrainian families practical help as well as a warm welcome to the town and surrounding area.

St Barbe for Ukraine are working in partnership with New Forest Homes for Ukraine (NFHU) in supporting our Ukranian guests. They run a successful matching service for guests wanting to settle in the New Forest.

For lots of information on how to support our Ukrainian guests, particularly offers to host a family, go to NFHU’s website https://www.newforesthomesforukraine.co.uk/

St Barbe has set up a special email address for all enquiries about offering homes or other support services for Ukrainian refugees: ukraine@stbarbe-museum.org.uk

Ukrainians are suffering on behalf of all democracies in their attempt to show that tyranny doesn’t pay. We are hoping that New Forest residents will show their appreciation by helping provide some refuge and support in their time of need.
